Problem

  • Automate the polishing of hardened steel collets used in machine tools:
    • Achieve a smooth satin-like micro finish without any visual blemishes, pits or scoring
    • Achieve a cycle time equal or better then the current manual process
    • Setup and maintenance should be simple to perform
    • A minimum run should complete the polishing of 50 collets and allow for inconsistency of part tolerance
Solution: Robotic Polishing Work Cell
  • A robotic polishing work cell that picks collets from a tray, moves them to the abrasive station and places them back in the tray.
  • End Effector securely holds collet and rotates at a high RPM.
  • Long life abrasive wheels with various grain sizes are rotated to match the path of the spinning collet.
